Biography
My name is Whitey Hurd. I was born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina. I am the first and the youngest in my family to attend a University. I graduated from Summerville High School, where I earned my Nail Technician license. I was influenced by everyone around me to go to college and show the world how I can make a difference. Some people didn’t think I could make it or wasn’t smart enough to attend college. Not only did I attend a college, I attended one of the best Historically Black University’s in the United States. My greatest influence would be my mother. She always encourages me and makes sure I stayed on the right path. Her encouragement and prayers kept me, and I love her for that.
I currently attend Claflin University, which is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. My major is Elementary Education with a minor in Business Administration. I choose my major because I wanted to make a difference in individuals’ lives. The best way to start is in the classroom. If I teach students the right way of learning at an early age, then they will never forget it. It will definitely benefit them in the future. I choose my minor because I want to own my own business one day. I would like to open up my own learning center for students of all ages. I attended Claflin University because I wanted a better education. Claflin has molded me into the women that I am today. While being a full time student, I was able to get experience in my field of study. Substituting for District 5 has been a great experience. I will be graduating on May 11, 2013 and attend graduate school to pursue my Ph.D. Claflin University has successfully prepared me for leadership and service in this multicultural, global, and technological society!
